Scaled Professional Scrum™

Scaled Professional ScrumTM (SPS) with Nexus is a 16 Hrs or 2-day course that is designed as an experiential workshop where students learn how to scale Scrum using the Nexus Framework. Throughout, you are introduced to the artifacts and events within the framework, the new Nexus Integration Team role, along with many associated practices.

Over the 2 days, students will learn with respect to a large software development project using the Nexus Framework. The workshop is delivered using a case study where students work together to organize and simulate a scaled software development project. Throughout the workshop, students will be introduced to more practices that can be used to help reduce complexity and dependencies at scale.

The workshop will provide students with an understanding of how to launch, structure, staff, and manage a large Agile project using Scrum. Throughout the workshop, students will learn the infrastructure, tools and practices needed to successfully scale Scrum to maximize the value of their software development initiative.

By taking a hands-on approach, students are fully engaged in the learning process where they see first-hand the challenges in large-scale development initiatives and solutions for getting the work back on track. They will leave the workshop with techniques to detect irregularities and how to address them appropriately.

Attendees make the most of the class if they:

  • Have studied the Scrum Guide (required).
  • Passed the Nexus Scaled Scrum assessment.
  • Have a solid understanding of Scrum either through working on a Scrum Team, or through taking part in a Scrum or Agile course.
  • Have been on or are closely involved in building or enhancing a software product or application.
  • Have read one of the Scrum books. See resources

The Scrum Framework

Scrum theory includes time-boxing, and specific roles, rules, and artifacts. All elements of Scrum complement each other to form a consistent whole. All work is performed in Sprints. All base rules, events, and roles are described in the Scrum Guide, the acknowledged Scrum body of knowledge. Each part of Scrum ties back to the principles and theory.

This is foundational knowledge for every Scrum Team member and anyone involved with Scrum. Scrum Masters additionally know how to explain, teach, coach and facilitate the proper use of the Scrum framework. Scrum Team assure the effective and consistent use of rules of Scrum, preventing them from falling apart.

Scrum Theory and Principles

Scrum is founded on empirical process theory to deal with the complexity typical to software development. All principles and values of Scrum are based on the fundamental view of software development as creative and complex work.

Scrum Team know how to use the empiricism of Scrum to build more valuable products. They understand how to benefit from working with self-organizing Development Teams. They understand how the Scrum principles tie back to the empirical nature of Scrum, and how they are fundamentally different from those applied in more traditional product management.

Scrum Team understand the impact of the transparency that Scrum brings and requires, and how Scrum is best used to increase an organization’s competitiveness and business agility.

Product Backlog Management

A Product Owner is accountable for the Product Backlog, and the ordering of all work that is identified for the product. Product Backlog is used to manage the requirements and can be used to plan releases, and track and report on progress.

Maximizing Value

Scrum is a foundation to unlock business agility. Scrum in itself however is–by design–incomplete. Agility will be much higher if Scrum is complemented by strategies for Agile product management and when metrics are in place to track the creation and delivery of value to the market place

Cross-functional, Self-organizing Teams

Scrum Teams are self-organizing and cross-functional; which is very different from traditional development groups.
Scrum Team acknowledge the self-organizing skills of Development Teams and how Development Teams organize their development work in creating Done Increments of product. Product Owners understand how their accountability is complementary to that of a Development Team, and not conflicting.

Scrum at Large

Scrum Team can identify waste and scaling options within a team to increase the effectiveness of the team in delivering releasable software. Scrum Masters can guide an organization in scaling to multiple Scrum Teams working on one software product and in aligning development on product lines or multiple interconnected products.

Scaled Professional Scrum with Nexus Practices
Scrum is a framework from which process evolves.  A Scrum Team or organization will build their process by assembling the proper practices that they feel will help them succeed with Scrum at the heart.
Nexus extends Scrum to guide multiple Scrum Teams on how they need to work together to deliver working software in every Sprint. It shows the journey these teams take as they come together, how they share work between teams, and how they manage and minimize dependencies.

In the Scaled Professional Scrum with Nexus course, students learn about many of the practices available to help their teams better scale.

•    Forming a Nexus - Organizing Teams
•    Forming a Nexus - Organizing Work
•    Running a Nexus
•    Managing a Nexus
